Glenn Crytzer returns with his Quartet to Tri-State, playing music from the Jazz Age and the Swing Era - "Vintage American Jazz". Glenn draws on the broad repertoire of styles of jazz that were performed prior to World War II. This includes the earliest jazz from New Orleans around the turn of the 20th century, and the styles that were part of the gradual morphing into the "hot jazz" style played by the dance orchestras (early big bands) and combos of the 1920s. People associate these sounds with Prohibition, speakeasies, gangsters, the Jazz Age, and the Great Gatsby. Glenn's All-Stars quartet recreates a small-group combo with accomplished vintage jazz specialists. Their superlative musicianship and unbridled swing is fueled by each musician's genuine love for playing pre-war jazz, making every performance one to remember.

Background

Glenn Crytzer is a New York City based bandleader, arranger, composer, guitarist, and vocalist who is in love with the music of the Jazz Age and Swing Era.

While completing his formal training in classical composition and cello at the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Florida State University, Glenn took up dancing the Lindy Hop as a hobby. Through the Lindy his love of early jazz grew, but he lamented that there were so few musical groups that specialized authentic performance of his favorite kind of music. Glenn decided to put his musical training to use, taught himself guitar, banjo, and jazz arranging, and set about bringing to life the music he loved.

Glenn has become a staple in New York City’s jazz scene as a guitarist and bandleader. He has released 8 albums with his big band and combos and dozens of his recordings have been featured in films and TV shows seeking to evoke the sound of the golden age of radio. In 2017 his big band was named Best Group in New York in the NYC Jazz Awards.

“Eloquent trumpet prodigy” Mike Davis (Wall Street Journal) has a voice beyond his years on his instrument. His playing is imbued with the sounds of prohibition-era speakeasies, Hoovervilles of the depression, and glittering jazz palaces of the swing era, creating a timeless cocktail of American music. A graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, Mike began his trumpet instruction at age nine with Jerry Oram in Seattle and went on to study with Laurie Frink during his undergraduate years. Both encouraged his interest in early jazz styles, which led to his beginning to work professionally in New York City while still in college. He now appears regularly around New York City as the leader of the New Wonders and with Dandy Wellington and his band, Emily Asher’s Garden Party, Glenn Crytzer, Terry Waldo, Baby Soda, Dan Levinson, and many other traditional jazz and swing bands. A regular at the celebrated jam session at Mona’s Bar, Mike is one of the vanguard of young musicians bringing traditional jazz to the forefront of the NYC music scene.

Jen Hodge is a bass player, vocalist, bandleader, and arranger. She originally hails from Western Canada, and relocated to New York City in the Fall of 2019. Jen's playing is characterized by hard swinging grooves, an expressive and energetic playing style, and an evident, infectious love for making music.
